Prestigious judges for the Cedar Key Arts Center first Quilt Show were Stephanie Metts, owner and operator of the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppes in Trenton and experienced, award winning quilter, and Mandy Ramaswami, of Ocala who is a noted Eleanor Burns certified quilting instructor. Both judges carefully studied each quilt and had a very difficult time with so many great entries to choose from. The judges took time to write personal comments to each of the quilters regarding their entry in the show. They stated that in this way they hope that they can inspire every quilter to continue to grow and improve.

A Look Back at the 2010-2011 Gallery Shows

November/December: VALERIE BRETL: The Cedar Key Arts Center began its 2010-2011 Season Saturday Night, November 20, with the opening of "Mosaic Magic" created by internationally recognized local artist Valerie Bretl. Inspired by the beauty and intimacy of our natural surroundings, Valerie has transformed the ancient art of mosaics with her own contemporary style that flows between the real and the surreal. This exhibit, featuring 20 new creations with titles such as "Tree Party," "Beach Day," and "Wings," is an enchanting MUST SEE! The show will run through the end of December, gallery is open 10-5pm daily.

January: This month the Cedar Key Arts Center was honored to share the works of two artists who know how to capture the spirit of Cedar Key in their paintings.  Sam Kates’ exhibit, entitled “A Salt Life,” was featured in the main gallery.  Painting in acrylics Sam says he likes to focus on “the water’s edge,” a very special and unique part of our natural environment and maritime heritage.  For over 50 years he has enjoyed painting buildings, boats and landscapes in and around Cedar Key, bringing back memories that fill your senses – the sight, the sound, the smell
and the feel of the Nature Coast.

In the Member Artists’ Gallery, the oil paintings of Cedar Keyhole Artist, Bob Goodlett were featured.  Bob’s serene interpretations of nature’s moods are both delicately and dramatically depicted in his paintings of our marshes, waterways and wildlife.

Thanks to the members and guests who attended Saturday night’s opening and had a chance to meet the artists. Exhibits are open daily from 10am – 5 pm.  The Arts Center is located at 475 2nd Street in Cedar Key.  Come in and enjoy the view.

February: Talented Artist form the area definitely ROCKED THE BOAT with over 30 entries.  Congratulations to Mike Leiner (1st), Bev Ringenberg (2nd) and Terry Hitt (3rd) and thanks to all the artists who helped make this exhibit a success.

March/April: The opening was well attended and guests were "exposed" to over 30 digitally creative entries. For this exhibit, photographers were encouraged to put their computers, as well as their cameras, to work. Commercial photographer and website designer, Bill Kilborn, judged the entries and prizes were awarded that evening. 1st and 3rd place went to Ann Kamzelski for "Where Fish Come From" and "Vintage Florida," respectively. 2nd place went to Libby Cagle for "Shell Mound." Mr. Kilborn awarded Honorable Mention to "Lower Suwanee" by Carol Sakellarios and "Guinness is Good for You" by Rory Brennan. Other judge's favorites included: "Cleansing Breeze" by Kellie Parkin, "A Monarch's Life" by Ann Kamzelski, and "Golden Buddha" by Rory Brennan.

April/May: The gallery was bursting at the seams with creativity as the Cedar Key School Children shared their school artwork with parents and visitors. The exhibit included all kinds of art including mache masks, ceramic plant hangers, 3-D models, artwork reflecting societal issues, self-portraits, and more.

A Special Reception to thank Cedar Key School Art Teacher, Debby Manansala, is planned for Saturday, May 7th, 5-7 pm upstairs at the Arts Center.
