February 12 - 14, 2012
- People in Places, Ray Hassard, $99 for members and $104 for non-members. http://rayhassard.com

People in public, engaging in everyday activities, can make for great paintings. We are surrounded by wonderful but overlooked subjects, from supermarkets to shopping malls and airports to restaurants and city streets, but the confusion and constant movement can make painting difficult. We will learn how to find those great pictures out there and how to tackle and overcome the problems involved. Ray, being primarily a pastellist, will demo in pastels, but any medium is welcome. Students should bring their own photos of public scenes to paint from, but Ray will also have many of his own available.

Day 1 - The morning will begin with a brief talk about what "genre" painting is, and where to find good subjects. We will discuss working from photographs, finding the "hidden" paintings in so-called "idiot" photos (point and shoot). With an image in mind, we will learn about transferring the picture to the painting surface, blocking in and simplifying the image to emphasise the focal point. There will be a morning demo emphasizing the drawing and block-in stages, and in the afternoon students will paint, getting a good start on a painting..

Day 2 - A brief talk about the legal issues of photographing people—privacy issues are important when painting in public and semi-public places. A demo will complete the painting begun yesterday, showing the next and final stages of a work. Students will paint for the rest of the day and finish up their paintings.

Day 3 - We will go out and paint public scenes en plein air. Ray will demo and show ways to deal with the constantly moving people. Students will paint in the afternoon. and we will end with have a final overall review and summing up. The workshop will end with a show/critique of participants' work and summing up with time for any final questions. Ray will discuss the problems and rewards of painting in public spaces. How to deal with constantly moving people, setting up safely and unobtrusively, issues of etiquette will be talked about. Students will have a good amount of time to paint, either to finish up a work in progress or start a new one. The workshop will end with a show/critique of participants' work and summing up with time for any final questions. Libby Cagle 352 543 5232

- Maggie McClellan Making Delicious Paintings (Portraits)
Dynamic Paintings of Faces and People

I found a tremendously exciting way to approach painting people that simply fills me with such joy I can hardly put my brush down. My goal is to show how the journey I’ve chosen worked for me and how it can work, with equal success, for anyone. I love to encourage and motivate each artist’s strengths, their unique talent and style. Through passing on the gems of “eureka” moments I accumulated from over 30 years of painting and nearly as many teaching, artists recognize how these gems of observation and developed skills will enhance their creative freedom. The artist’s in my workshops fill a “toolbox” with experiences they can use for years to come to develop a more intimate knowledge of what gives dynamic life to a portrait.

I can’t wait to meet and share a wonderful week with each of you. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions you might have. You will be painting from life each day. A supply list will be available at the Arts Center, through email or on-line at www.maggiemcclellan.com. 941-460-6055 or Cell: 305-206-1404
